The funny thing about all this is that more than five years ago, in 2002, Lincoln showed a concept car, that had it been green-lighted for production, may have at this point, helped turned Lincoln around, Gerry McGovern’s stunning 2002 Continental concept. Here was a car that integrated many design cues of the 1961 Continental, but incorporated them into a bold and fresh package that by now would have provided a clear alternative to competitive luxury cars.

At the time, there was much enthusiasm for this design which in the words of then Mercury President Brian Kelley who said, “This is a pivotal year in Lincoln’s long-term growth strategy…we are launching three new products this summer to build on our strong foundation, and we are presenting the Continental to show where we will take the brand in the near future.”
